Mega Rare Funk 45 Compilation

By James Trouble

Side 1

'Huxleys Howl' Howard Wales

Kicking off with a record I have been playing since the days of the 'cookie jar'. A wailing Hammond and a killer horn section that stabs away at your soul until every bone in your body is forced to shake about to the unforgiving girations of the bass line.Massive.

'Soulful' The Apostles

Immense, chugging dance floor funk that has been pounding deepfunk dance floors for several years.Contains all the vital ingredients and for any budding DJs this track comes with a guarantee to get any deepfunk dance party going.

'Evolution' Magnum

Was a tip I received from fellow collector and East end diamond 'the Rustler'.Again another supurb dancefloor stormer that is now in such demand, and is so hard to find. Now it can be yours for the two bob you are about to pay for this compilation.

'Love is What You Make It' Helen White

Slippery guitar, hypnotic and undeniably heavy groove on this obscure piece of sister funk, that has until now been a closely guarded secret known only to those who attend my nights. This is the only copy known in the collectors world.

'Bottom of the Bag' Joe Lee and his combo

So many musicians in the 60's & 70's took it upon themselves to record versions of that Burt Baccarach Standard 'Close To You', the best example I've heard so far being by Carl 'Sherlock' Holmes on his Investigation LP.Well, Mr. Lee too decided to have a pop as well, but he also had the good sense to commit 'Bottom Of The Bag' to the flip side of this release and in doing so, treated us to this superb flute/hammond monster.

'Borracho' Dyna-might

Ever since DJ Rob Higgs started pushing latin funk back in the cookie jar days I have been on the constant look out for this stuff. One of the finest examples of this sub genre of funk,Borrachio means drunk, but unlike the crap you hear in cheesy salsa clubs you don't need to down a bottle of Brazilian Brandy to enjoy this master piece.

'Drums for Sale' Jimmy Mayes & The Soul Breed

Heavy, tight boogaloo. Not for the faint hearted, this drum heavy behemoth hits hard from the out set.Personally I have injured myself twice dancing to this, and I will warn you that if you put this record on to a full dance floor you should have a first aid kit handy.

Side 2

'Funky Junkie ' Charles Prior & the Power of Love

Japanese Jimmy Dynamite was the first person to start playing this out, and when I heard it I took him out for a drink and gave him a piece of heavy duty boogaloo in exchange for his copy.It says disco on the label, but don't let visions of the Bee Gees and stick on afro wigs put you off. This is as hard as nails, and the bass line is so compulsive that even the simplest house heads, or drum and bass dim witts find it impossible to stand still to.

'How Good is Good' Mickey & The Soul Generation

Micky and the soul generation have made a handfull of good funk tracks. This one is the favourate amongst the dancers. I first heard about this record when a copy passed through the hands of Malcom Cato. A six month search and a monkey later and I have myself three minutes of hammond organ that builds and builds to an awsome climax. Boss, a guaranteed floor filler, and arguably one of the top ten funk45s of all time.

'Silver Lining' Silver Lining

Excellent mid 70's funk workout from New York, which like Charles Pryor has a disco/boogie feel but stays firmly rooted in the funk camp. The record basically serves to announce the presence of the group as the singer talks us around the star-signs of his various band members!

'Dance Man' Melvin Brown

There have been a number of releases on this label, but this is probably the rarest.Pushing the boundaries layed down in the late sixties and early seventies this track showcases the transition into disco music.Although not funk in the strictest sense of the term, this track is very relivent on the dance floors of todays scene as we move into the 21st century. This one I picked up when it passed through the hands of a northern soul and rare funk dealer friend of mine; a bucket load of Edward Elgars later and it was mine.

'The Way We Live' Rawl Soul Express

I was first put on to this by superstar DJ Ian Wright. Not really pure funk, but sounds like a deeper heavier version of the sounds that were played by poncy 'Acid Jazz' DJs in the late eighties and early ninetys. However those pretenders who had the front to call their sound 'rare groove' did not know the meaning of rare. If only they had of dug instead of scratch around on the surface then that scene may actually have gone some where interesting instead of degenerating into new jazzy beats that you hear being played in trendy night spots full of thirty somthings dressed in baggy trousers and smart trainers with a fold up micro scooter on their backs; some one should tell them how silly they look!

'Sweet Joe Baby' Helen White

I could talk about tears being shed while recording this and the blood from Helen White's broken heart being mixed with the vinyl when this record was pressed, but instead two words sum this up- real soul.

'Two Heads are Better than one' Jeanie Dee

Not as scarce as the other tracks on this compilation, but then again rarety is not everything.Chugging female vocal funk that is always an irresistable crowd pleaser.
