The Label was started in 1997 by D.J.Junk from The Second To None B-Boy Crew. The B-Boy crew already had a large name worldwide in the breaking scene and D.J. Junk already had a historyof producing records and running record labels with genres ranging from Hardcore and Jungle through to House.
Junk noticed a gap in the market for 'B-Boy' type music,as mainstream Hip Hop was ever more detached from the Breaking scene and the worldwide Breaking scene was rapidly expanding.
Junk had already been producing his 'Breakbeat Mix' tapes for several years now and had been selling them in small quantities at the Hip Hop and B-Boy jams he used to attend in Europe. The feedback of these tapes from the people that had bought them was always very positive and he tested the market for a vinyl album of his work in 1996.
The album 'Breaker Breaks Volume One' did not get released till '97 although the test presses were done in '96 due to Junk taking ages to design the sleeve artwork.Released in '97 the response to the album was much better than expected and sold a lot more copies than expected.Reaching a winning formular with this album after building a successful House label before then having it flop after a few years Junk decided to focus all his energies into this project and followed up with 'Breaker Breaks Volume Two' and the 'Second To None' Label was born.
'Breaker Breaks' 3 and 4 were released in the years that followed and then Junk wanted to add something new to run along side his 'Breaker' series. He released a 12" single ,two tracks aimed at the breaking scene but of a different formular to the 'Breakers' series. The 12" was called 'Bigmouth'/'Big Bread Winner' and these are more breakbeat tracks than breakbeat mixes and has started a chain of 12" records that Junk wants to do,the second 12" has rapper 'Blade' on one of the tracks.
At the same time of 'Bigmouth' Junk wanted to put out a compilation album of the classic 'Old Skool Hip Hop' and 'Funk Breaks' that were becoming harder and harder to find original copies of.This series was called 'B-Boy Anthems' and has reached volume 6 so far. Also on the compilation tip, Junk spotted funk D.J. James Trouble at a club and approached him about compiling an album of rare funk, the album 'Trouble With Funk' was released in 2001 and starts 'Second To None' into the world of deep funk.More funk compilations are planned with albums compiled by funk collectors and D.J.s.
On the 'Battleweapon' tip Junk approached top scratch D.J. and ex member of 'The Scratch Perverts' -'D.J. First Rate' about putting together a battleweapon for the label. As 'First Rate' had known 'Second To None' since '89 when they used to attend his parties in Tunbridge Wells naturally he obliged and the 'First Rate' battleweapon album 'Laying Cable' is due for release in October 2001.
From the website of 'Second To None' a demo was received from Japan, Japan already was a big market for 'Second To Nones' records and the demo would be an interesting project. The demo was by 'D.J. Aku. and is a very different, raw style of instumental Breakbeat Hip Hop and the album 'Mixing Cooking' is due for release in October 2001.
Other albums are planned by other members of 'Second To None'.Darrel 'Wax Buzzard's album is planned for release soon, plus 'Tony Da Pencil's funk comp and 'Palmer's breakbeat album.
